UTOPIA

In the crucial historical period that contemporary civilization is going through, the symptoms of a global systemic disease seem to be in-creasing, which according to many could lead within many years to a situation of irreversible degradation of the planet.

Catastrophism and sensationalism aside, although widely present in every type of approach to the problem, it seems that the future imagi-ned by most is dystopian (from Dystopia: a term invented in 1868 by the philosopher John Stuart Mill as opposed to the term Utopia) and dystopian texts appear as warning works about where current negati-ve trends can arrive if left free to develop in time and space (e.g. George Orwell's 1984 or Aldous Huxley's Brave New World).

Instead, I believe the time has come to rediscover the positive value, even symbolic, of Utopia, rejecting the negativist drift sponsored by the current pragmatic, consumerist and ultimately cannibalistic socie-ty. Also because, without going back to an archaic Golden Age or even to the archetype of the Earthly Paradise, history has been cha-racterized by continuous references to the concept of Utopia: from the myth of Plato's Atlantis to Thomas Moore's Utopia, from Campanella's City of the Sun to Bacon's New Atlantis, from Libertalia, legendary pirate colony in Madagascar, in Thule, a mythical island on the nor-thern edge of the world.

Oscar Wilde said it well: "A map of the world that does not contain Utopia is not even worth a glance, because it leaves out the country in which humanity continues to land. And when it arrives, humanity looks around, sees a better country and hoists the sails again. Progress is the realization of Utopia."

Therefore, utopian thinking appears to be a fundamental activity to critically interpret the present, to serve as a spur for a more structured commitment that activates hope for the realization of a better future, acting as a guide in chaotic moments.

UTOPIA

Nel cruciale periodo storico che la civiltà contemporanea sta attraver-sando sembrano aumentare i sintomi di una malattia sistemica globale che secondo molti potrebbe portare entro non moltissimi anni ad una situazione di degrado irreversibile il pianeta. 

Catastrofismi e sensa-zionalismo a parte, pur largamente presenti in ogni tipo di approccio al problema, sembra che il futuro immaginato dai più sia distopico (da Distopia: termine inventato nel 1868 dal filosofo John Stuart Mill in contrapposizione al termine Utopia) ed i testi distopici appaiono come opere di avvertimento su dove possono arrivare le tendenze negative attuali se lasciate libere di svilupparsi nel tempo e nello spazio (es: 1984 di George Orwell o Brave New World di Aldous Huxley).

Credo invece sia giunto il momento di riscoprire il valore positivo an-che simbolico dell’Utopia, rifiutando la deriva negativista sponsorizza-ta dall’attuale società pragmatica, consumistica ed in ultimo cannibale-sca. Anche perché, pur senza risalire ad un’arcaica Età dell’Oro o per-fino all’archetipo del Paradiso Terrestre, la storia è stata contraddistin-ta da continui richiami al concetto di Utopia: dal mito di Atlantide di Platone all’Utopia di Thomas Moore, dalla Città del Sole di Campanel-la alla Nuova Atlantide di Bacon, da Libertalia, leggendaria colonia di pirati in Madagascar, a Thule, mitica isola ai confini settentrionali del mondo.

Disse bene Oscar Wilde: “Una cartina del mondo che non contenga Utopia non è degna neppure di uno sguardo, perché tralascia il paese nel quale l'umanità continua ad approdare. E, quando vi approda, l'u-manità si guarda intorno, vede un paese migliore e issa nuovamente le vele. Il progresso è la realizzazione di Utopia”.

Dunque il pensiero utopico appare attività fondamentale per interpre-tare criticamente il presente, servire da sprone per un impegno più strutturato che attivi la speranza per la realizzazione di un futuro mi-gliore, fungendo da guida nei momenti caotici.

L’Utopia come bussola quando i cieli notturni futuri si fanno orfani di stelle.
